Western Asia – Caucasus – Central Asia

Scientific project

CartOrient is a website for diffusing cartographical studies on the Caucasus and western and central Asia. Its goal is to provide for:
- pooling data
- developing tools for making and analyzing maps
- diffusing cartographical knowledge to the scientific community and a broader public
- fostering interactions between colleagues working in different disciplines and countries.

CartOrient is a multidisciplinary projectheedful of studies in all the social and human sciences (geography, history, archeology, etc.) on this geographical area, regardless of the historical period, whether ancient or modern.

CartOrient has three modules for viewing maps:
- an interactive atlas
- thematic atlases
- a library of digitized atlases and maps

CartOrient is a scientific publication. An editorial board reviews the maps and texts posted on this website.

CartOrient’s development is assumed by UMR 8041 Centre de recherche sur le Monde iranien (CNRS, Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle, ÉPHÉ, INALCO) in collaboration with EA 4313 Centre de recherches Europes – Eurasie (CREE, INALCO). This project received funding from Université Sorbonne Paris Cité (USPC) for the period from 2015 to 2016. This website has drawn on the experience acquired when Irancarto was developed for UMR 7528 Mondes Iranien et Indien under the supervision of Bernard Hourcade.
